Common structure on Organizations of Japanese Navy 日本海軍の組織構成

Division

Division 分隊 Buntai is the most basic unit in Japanese Navy (like Company in Army). Almost all enlisted, petty officers, warrant officers, lower rank of officers are belong to any Division. Division is the place the member works, being trained, and lives.
Usually the Division commander 分隊長 Buntaicho was appointed with Lieutenant or equivalent. Typically, Division is made by related jobs. For example, Engineer branch consists of 4 Divisions, engine operators, boiler operators, electricity operators, auxiliary power supply operators. Sometimes, in case of small number of members, it is possible to make a Division with various job, for example, Band members and medical members can belong to same Division.
Assistant Division officer 分隊士 Buntaishi is the support staff to Division commander. This is not an official job (except very earlier days). They are assigned from crew officer (ship) or attendant officer (other organization) by commander.
Division was also divided into SectionHan usually. The leader 班長 Hancho was assigned from petty officers by Division commander.

Ship

Imperial warship

  • Commanding officer (CO) 艦長 Kancho is the head of the ship, responsible to all things about his ship and crew.
  • Executive officer (XO) 副長 Fukucho is to support his boss, commanding officer. And responsible to daily administration of the ship, and command quick treatment in emergency case.
    • Chief Navigator 航海長 Kokaicho is the head of Navigation branch (navigation gear, steering gear, visual signal, watch)
    • Chief Gunner 砲術長 Hojutsucho is the head of Gunnery branch (gun, magazine, fire control, rangefinder, search light)
      • Deputy Gunner 副砲長 Fukuhocho usually command the secondary gun.
    • Chief Torpedo officer 水雷長 Suiraicho is the head of Torpedo branch (torpedo, torpedo tube, mine, mine layer, minesweeping)
    • Chief Communication officer 通信長 Tsushincho is the head of Communication branch (radio communications, telegram, ciphering)
    • Chief Operator 運用長 Unyocho is the head of Operation branch (emergency gear). In 1943 merged to Chief Interior officer
    • Chief Aviation officer 飛行長 Hikocho is the head of Aviation branch (aircraft, lift, takeoff/landing gear, aerial weapons, photograph, air traffic control)
      • Wing commander 飛行隊長 Hikotaicho is the head of aviator (aircrew).
    • Chief Maintenance officer 整備長 Seibicho is the head of Maintenance branch (aircraft maintenance)
    • Chief Engineer 機関長 Kikancho is the head of Engineer branch. (engine control, boiler, electricity, auxiliary power supply)
    • Chief Construction officer 工作長 Kosakucho is the head of Construction branch (ship maintenance, diving, ballast water control). In 1943 merged to Chief Interior officer
    • Chief Surgeon 軍医長 Gunicho is the head of Surgeon branch (medical affairs)
    • Chief Paymaster 主計長 Shukeicho is the head of Paymaster branch (accounting affairs, food supply, clothing, payment)
    • Chief Interior officer 内務長 Naimucho. created 1943 by merger of Chief Operator and Chief Construction officer, electricity and power supply in Chief Engineer job.
    • Division commander 分隊長 Buntaicho
    • Crew 乗組 Norikumi. If officer, they worked as assistant to any member above. Here are some examples (internal) job name:
      • Assistant Navigator 航海士 Kokaishi
      • Assistant Gunner 砲術士 Hojutsushi
      • Assistant Engineer 機関長附 Kikancho Zuki
      • Assistant Paymaster 庶務主任 Shomu Shunin
      • Assistant Division officer 分隊士 Buntaishi

(note) some of branches (and chiefs) above cannot exist depends on the equipment of the ship. For example, there is no Aviation branch nor Maintenance branch if the ship cannot carry any aircraft.

Other than Imperial warship

In Fighting ship and Auxiliary vessel other than Imperial warship, Commanding officer was officially called with the type, for example:

  • Destroyer Commanding officer 駆逐艦長 Kuchikukancho for Destroyer
  • Submarine Commanding officer 潜水艦長 Sensuikancho for Submarine
  • Minesweeper Commanding officer 掃海艇長 Sokaiteicho for Minesweeper
  • Auxiliary Commanding officer 特務艦長 Tokumukancho for Auxiliary ship
  • Auxiliary craft Commanding officer 特務艇長 Tokumuteicho for Auxiliary craft

There is no Executive officer in such ship, Senior officer 先任将校 Sennin Shoko works the role instead. The most senior commissioning (ie. except Surgeon, Paymaster officer etc) officer next to the Commanding officer become the Senior officer automatically. Before 1942 Engineer officer is not regarded to eligible to be the Senior officer.

Auxiliary ship

In some Auxiliary ship, Executive officer is appointed officially even though other than Imperial warship.

Unit

Unit with ships

Unit 隊 Tai was usually consists of several Fighting ships other than Imperial warship. It is treated equivalent with an Imperial warship. For example, Destroyer Unit 駆逐隊 Kuchikutai is usually consists of 3 or 4 Destroyers, 2-4 Destroyer units creates a Torpedo Squadron, like several Imperial warships creates Squadron.
